The “Emprisonné” series (2010) derives from an earlier installation, titled “Birds of a Feather” (2008). This latter work was made especially for an exhibition organized by the Belgian art collective Artikel 27 in Waterloo that carried the title of “In Search of Identity”. Small, birdlike human figures, made of bone, are caught behind bars. Their cages hang down from a black globe: no matter where on earth, it seems inevitable that people are imprisoned by national/ist values, culture or history.
In the Emprisonné boxes it is the viewer who is also imprisoned: the bars prevent viewers from an unhindered look inside. Yet, this forces the viewer to make a greater effort to concentrate on what is found inside, to break through the barriers. What takes place inside and how deeply can one penetrate this world? The viewer sees herself reflected in the mirror behind the bars, as is the world behind and around her.
